Cobra Kai Brings Anthony LaRusso Into the Fold

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Season 4 of Cobra Kai, streaming now on Netflix.

Over its first four seasons, Cobra Kai has done a great job of mixing nostalgia with new. All kinds of characters from the original Karate Kid movies have come out of the woodwork to be a part of the series, but the younger generation of characters hasn’t been overshadowed. That, however, doesn’t mean that everyone has been given their due. Anthony LaRusso, specifically, has almost been a forgotten character – that is, until Season 4.

In the first three seasons, Anthony’s appearances were few and far between. On top of that, he never did anything of note. Except for an occasional snide remark to Johnny Lawrence or asking for food, the only thing that Anthony ever did was walk around with his nose stuck in some kind of technology. In fact, he was almost completely missing from Season 2, which was explained away by saying that he was at summer camp. In Season 4, however, Anthony finally gets his own story arc.

From the very beginning of the season, it was clear that Anthony had fallen in with a bad crowd. When a new kid, Kenny, showed up at their school mid-year, he was a prime for bullying. It also didn’t help that Anthony and Kenny had a crush on the same girl. So, when given the opportunity, Anthony joined in with his friends’ attempts to prove their dominance over the new kid. All of that came back in Anthony’s face, though, when Kenny joined Cobra Kai and learned karate to defend himself.

Along the way, Anthony lied and told his father that a Cobra Kai kid was bullying him. So, Daniel tried to teach his son karate, but Anthony wasn’t interested because he was too young to have known Mr. Miyagi. In fact, he skipped out on his training and paid someone to clean the classic cars at Miyagi-Do, while planning to lie about having done it himself.

Later, Anthony tried to make peace, but Kenny wanted nothing to do with it; he wanted his revenge. So, after they were caught fighting, Kenny snitched to the school administration and got Anthony and his friends in trouble for bullying. Daniel and Amanda were appalled to learn that their son was actually the bully and took all of his electronics away as punishment. After that, and a stern talking to from his father, Anthony sort of leaned his lesson and sincerely apologized to Kenny at the karate tournament. By then, though, it was too late. Kenny, who had just lost his tournament fight, was not interested in forgiveness and started beating Anthony up before Robby stopped him.

The whole thing was actually a pretty ironic turn of events. As one of their relatives pointed out, Anthony was acting out because of the lack of attention that his parents had been paying to him. That, however, was perfectly illustrated by the lack of screen time that his character has been given over the course of the series. Now, though, it looks like Anthony will be a more regular part of things.

Finally incorporating Anthony was a great way to introduce Kenny as Cobra Kai’s newest villain, and it’s clear that their rivalry is far from over. At the end of the season, Anthony agreed to really start learning karate from his father. So, with Season 5 coming, it’s clear that he and Kenny will be the latest rivalry in a string of conflicts between a LaRusso and a member of the Cobra Kai dojo. In fact, it’s probably only a matter of time before Anthony and Kenny have an all-out brawl.

Cobra Kai's four seasons are available to stream now on Netflix.
