Batman's Former Sidekick Nightwing Is Superman's New Mentor

The adopted son of Bruce Wayne and the biological son of Clark Kent get together for some friendly mentorship in the upcoming Nightwing #89.

Written by Tom Taylor and illustrated by Bruno Redondo, Nightwing #89 sees Jon Kent hanging out with Dick Grayson. DC has teased that Nightwing will share advice and friendship with Jon, who is still making his way as the new Superman of Earth while his father travels to Warworld. This development mirrors how years ago, Nightwing sought out Superman for advice on how to move on in his superhero career after he felt he had outgrown the role of Batman's sidekick, Robin.

Nightwing's connection with Superman dates back to 1968's Superman #158, where the Man of Steel and Jimmy Olsen visited the bottled Kryptonian city of Kandor, a place where Superman had no powers. Taking inspiration from Batman and Robin, Superman and Jimmy Olsen looked to two birds indigenous to Kandor and took on the costumed identities of Nightwing and Flamebird. Batman and Robin would later visit Kandor in 1964's World's Finest #143 and learn of these identities, and when Dick Grayson decided to move on from the role of Robin in 1984's Tales of the Teen Titans #44, he chose the name Nightwing. At the time, Dick ruminated that both Batman and Superman's guidance had helped him grow into a man, and he wanted a title that reflected a connection to both of them.

In the 2017 series Super Sons, Jon Kent was established as the best friend of Damian Wayne, the fourth Robin. An expedition into space saw Jon aged up by three years, but their recent interaction in the pages of Superman: Son of Kal-El #1 shows that despite the age difference, Jon and Damian remain close confidants. Jon has had less interactions with Dick, but considering the close relationship between Dick and Damian as established in the Batman and Robin series of 2009, it only makes sense that the new Man of Steel would turn to the elder sidekick who taught Damian how to be a Boy Wonder.

Nightwing #89 goes on sale Feb. 15 from DC.
