What Makes Thena the Eternals' Deadliest Fighter?

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Eternals, now playing in theaters.

Marvel Studios' Eternals introduces a new collection of warriors and thinkers that feature abilities unique to each character. For example, Ajak (Salma Hayek) can heal while Sersi (Gemma Chan) can transmute matter, but among some of their most powerful warriors, none compare to the deadly precision of Thena (Angelina Jolie).

From the beginning of the movie, it's clear that Thena isn't the strongest of the Eternals. That title goes to Gilgamesh (Don Lee), who can create armor around his fists to deliver powerful punches to Deviants. Thena also isn't the most resourceful, as Ikaris (Richard Madden) is capable of flight, super strength and eye beams. However, even with these shortcomings, Thena's abilities allow her to hone a skill that none of the other Eternals are able to master.

Each Eternal is charged what Cosmic Energy, and their cosmic abilities come from within and can even offer some protection for the warriors. However, for the thinkers, their powers can affect individuals without even touching them and leave them exposed to physical attacks. Thena is a unique addition because she can generate any weapon that comes to mind through Cosmic Energy, but her own defenses are up to her alone.

That being said, Thena is far from helpless. On the contrary, with her heightened strength, durability and speed, she is able to go toe to toe with the Eternals. This is because what she lacks in armor or eye beams, she makes up for with battle awareness and a warrior's precision. Furthermore, Thena is ruthless in battle and has shown on more than one occasion that she could easily overpower the Eternals if she needed to. This is later proven when she suffers from the effects of Mahd Wy'ry.

In the comics, Mahd Wy'ry happens when an Eternals' mind breaks under the weight of thousands of years of memories. For Thena, she begins reliving past lives and attacks the Eternals. She wounds Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry), Ajak and Makkari (Lauren Ridloff). The only one who stands a chance against her fury is Gilgamesh, and the two form a bond because of it. A narrative side effect of Mahd Wy'ry benefits the audiences because it shows why she's so respected among the Eternals and what happens when she doesn't hold back in a fight.

When fighting Ikiaris and Kro in the film's finale, Thena doesn't miss a beat and fights to kill, successfully holding back Ikaris and later killing Kro. Even though her ability is relegated to creating weapons, Thena alone honed her mind and body to be ready for any challenge that comes her way. She knows she isn't the strongest or the fastest Eternal, but rather than see their powers as strengths; she treats them as obstacles to overcome. As a result, her battlefield awareness is unmatched, and she isn't afraid to do what must be done to save the people she loves. Her resolve makes her the deadliest Eternal rather than the powers she's been given.

To see Thena command the battlefield, Eternals is in theaters now.
