Hawkeye's Vincent D’Onofrio Discusses Packing on Weight to Play Kingpin Again

Hawkeye star Vincent D'Onofrio revealed how he put on weight for his return as Kingpin.

Speaking to ComicBook.com, D'Onofrio explained how a combination of putting on weight, camera tricks and padding was what gave Kingpin his larger look. "In a couple of shots, there were [camera perspective tricks]. But we tried a couple of different looks and the one we came down to was some extra shoulders, and extra chest, and extra girth around the middle," D'Onofrio revealed. "I always go up about somewhere between 15 and 20 pounds when I play Fisk. Because he needs that round face…I have to put on additional weight to get some weight [in my face], to fill out my cheeks a little bit more, and then the rest [is costuming and effects]."

D'Onofrio, who is 62, added that his age meant he needed to be more careful when putting on and losing weight for roles. "It's too hard to take off and it's just not healthy anymore," he explained. "Back when I was young, I could go up and down fairly frequently."

The actor also discussed the importance of his diet when slimming down from the role. "That doesn't mean less food, it just means the right kind of food," D'Onofrio said. "I've always worked out my whole life, I never stopped working out. I only changed my size. So I never lose my stretching and I never lose my strength, I just change sizes."

Episode 5 of Hawkeye saw Kingpin's arrival in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having previously been played by D'Onofrio in the Marvel Netflix series Daredevil. Kingpin, also known as Wilson Fisk, appears in Hawkeye after the Blip in Avengers: Endgame saw him lose power over his empire. D'Onofrio also confirmed that Daredevil's Kingpin and Hawkeye's Kingpin are the same character.

The final moments of the Hawkeye finale saw Maya Lopez/Echo confront Kingpin after she found out he was responsible for the death of her father. As the camera cuts away, Maya fires a gun, implying his demise, but ultimately leaving Kingpin's fate up for speculation. It is currently unknown whether Marvel Studios has any future plans for Kingpin and whether D'Onofrio will return once more.

All episodes of Hawkeye are streaming now of Disney+.
