Naomi Introduces a Different DCTV Superman

DCTV show Naomi introduces its own version of Superman.

In an interview with Good Day Sacramento, star Kaci Walfall said that the Man of Steel who appears in Naomi is not the same as the one played by actor Tyler Hoechlin in Superman & Lois. "Naomi exists in her own universe," Walfall said. "Tyler wasn't on set, but I'm excited for fans to see our version of Superman." At this time, it's not totally clear who plays Superman in Naomi or just how he'll factor into the rest of Season 1.

Hoechlin, who was previously known for his role as Derek Hale on Teen Wolf, debuted as Clark Kent/Superman in Supergirl Season 2, Episode 1, "The Adventures of Supergirl," though the character appeared in an extremely limited capacity before then. Following that appearance, Hoechlin's Superman played a key role in a number of major Arrowverse crossovers for several years before Superman & Lois debuted in 2021. Superman & Lois Season 2 is currently set for Jan. 11.

Created by Brian Michael Bendis, David F. Walker and Jamal Campbell, Naomi McDuffie/Powerhouse -- whose name pays homage to beloved comics creator Dwayne McDuffie -- first appeared in a self-titled book in 2019. Naomi, whose powers include super-strength and energy manipulation, hails from an alternate version of Earth that was devastated when a group of people received their metahuman abilities caused by radiation. Superman plays a key role in Naomi's origin, as a battle between him and the villainous Mongul is what causes her to start investigating her own background. Eventually, Naomi became a key member of the Young Justice team.

In 2020, director Ava DuVernay was announced as developing Naomi for The CW. The project was then given a series order in 2021. Despite airing on The CW -- which is known for its DC shows -- Naomi Season 1 will not, according to DuVernay, feature any crossovers with the Arrowverse or DC Extended Universe. However, promotional material has made clear Naomi's connection to Superman will still remain. Still, it is not known at this time if Naomi will ever crossover with the rest of the Arrowverse or if she'll remain separate for the foreseeable future.

Developed by DuVernay, Naomi premieres Jan. 11 on The CW. The first episode, which is just titled "Pilot," was directed by Amanda Marsalis from a script by DuVernay and Jill Blankenship. Subsequent episodes air on Tuesdays.
