Paul Rudd Addresses Bill Murray's Ant-Man and the Wasp Role

Will Bill Murray actually have a role in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania? It's probably best not to ask star Paul Rudd.

On the red carpet for the premiere of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which will definitively feature Murray and Rudd working together, the latter was asked by Entertainment Tonight about the potential involvement of the former in next year's Marvel film. But Rudd played coy, saying he'd heard the rumors but thinks it might be confusion over Afterlife featuring the two working together. When asked who Murray could play if he was involved, Rudd praised the actor and his work with Wes Anderson, claiming he could well be anyone in the film.

Of course, the rumors are more than just that at this point. Last month, a cast listing for the sequel included Murray's name. Just two weeks later, Murray claimed in a German newspaper that he had made a Marvel movie with the director of Bring It On (Peyton Reed, the director of all three Ant-Man films). But he made it clear it was a one-time thing.

"I got to know the director -- and really liked him very much," Murray said. "He was funny, humble, everything you want from a director. And with the cheerleader story Bring It On he made a movie years ago, which I think is damn good. So I agreed, although I'm not interested in these huge comic book adaptations as an actor otherwise."

A few days later, Murray was asked again while appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! about his potential role. Though he avoided the question, he did list off the various cast members involved. All told, there's no official confirmation that Murray will be in the film. But given everything that's come out in the past month, it seems clear that he'll play some part.

Joining Rudd and potentially Murray will be returning cast members Evangeline Lily, Michael Douglas, and Michelle Pfeiffer. Playing the villain will be Jonathan Majors, who debuted in the MCU on Loki as He Who Remains. Though that character perished, Kang, a variant of him, will appear in Ant-Man 3. There have also been rumors that Jim Carrey has been cast as M.O.D.O.K. and may debut in the film, but he could also appear earlier on She-Hulk.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife debuts Nov. 19. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania arrives in theaters, with or without Murray, on July 28, 2023.
