Peacemaker Clip Makes [SPOILER] DCEU Canon, Namedrops Harley Quinn

An official clip from James Gunn's DC Extended Universe series Peacemaker, which premiered on HBO Max today, not only namedrops Peacemaker's fellow Task Force X member Harley Quinn, but also confirms a rather bothersome member of Batman's rogues gallery as DCEU canon.

The clip, shared by Gunn himself on Twitter, finds John Economos (Steve Agee) stitching up Christopher Smith/Peacemaker's (John Cena) wounds. Before too long, Peacemaker's attitude becomes too much for Economos to handle. "I'd rather be with Harley Quinn than you," Economos snaps. "I'd rather be with the Weasel than you... I'd rather be with fuckin' Bat-Mite than you."

When Peacemaker questions who Bat-Mite is, Economos responds, "He's a two-foot-tall interdimensional imp who stans Batman." He then affirms to Peacemaker that Bat-Mite is, in fact, real. Fittingly, Gunn shared the clip alongside a caption simply reading, "Canon."

Created by Bill Finger and Sheldon Moldoff, Bat-Mite first appeared in Detective Comics #267. As John Economos says, he is indeed a two-foot-tall imp hailing from the Fifth Dimension who is obsessed with Batman, even going as far as to dress like him. Bat-Mite is similar in nature to the Superman villain Mister Mxyzptlk, another trickster imp from the Fifth Dimension.

However, whereas Mxyzptlk causes trouble because he enjoys tormenting the Superman, Bat-Mite does it because he wants to see the Dark Knight, his idol, in action. Furthermore, while Mxyzptlk is famously difficult to get rid of, Bat-Mite tends to leave willingly upon realizing that he made Batman angry.

In other words, it seems as though somewhere in the DCEU, Ben Affleck's Batman has an imp superfan of his very own. This is especially noteworthy given the Harley Quinn namedrop, seeing as how Margot Robbie's Harley is one of the few characters Peacemaker knows who has actually shared the screen with Affleck's Batman. The Caped Crusader and the Clown Princess of Crime previously crossed paths in David Ayer's 2016 DCEU film Suicide Squad.

Robbie later reprised her role in Gunn's 2021 standalone sequel/soft reboot The Suicide Squad, joining the likes of Cena's Peacemaker and Idris Elba's Bloodsport, among many others. HBO Max's Peacemaker spins out of The Suicide Squad, following Peacemaker on new missions following his supposed death. The series premiered its first three episodes today, Jan. 13. Peacemaker Season 1 is slated to run for eight episodes in total, with new episodes dropping weekly through Feb. 17.

The first three episodes of Peacemaker are streaming now on HBO Max. New episodes air on Thursdays.
