As players explore the Pokémon Sinnoh remakes Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, a teaser for the future title Pokémon Legends: Arceus could be hiding in the game.
As reported by IGN Africa, the Gen 4 remakes have added a new piece of reading material in the Canalave City library that may tease what's to come in Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Players can interact with various books in the Canalave Library and uncover lore about the Sinnoh region and its Legendary Pokémon. Many of these tales about Palkia, Dialga, and more have remained largely the same but for one or two lines. However, a recently discovered story entitled "The Sea's Legend" has been hidden away on the second floor of the library.
"The Sea's Legend," which you can view in the clip from the YouTube channel Game Clips and Tips above, reads, "Once upon a time in the East Sea, there was a Pokémon known as the prince. A brave human asked Pokémon living in the sea to let them see the prince. Mantyke, Buizel, and a Quilfish with huge spikes acknowledged the human's bravery and joined them. Together, they set off in a boat over the sunset-streaked sea, sailing through the ocean gate stretched over the waves. News of this reached the ears of the prince, who went to meet the brave little party at the Seaside Hollow."
Such an abrupt cutoff to the story could imply the ending is being kept hidden for now. Naturally, there are assumptions that this could be teasing a storyline or quest in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, but there's not much information to go on.
Mentioning the East Sea certainly implies the folktale takes part in Sinnoh, or Hisui, as the region was once known, which has two different variations of Gastrodon depending on whether they inhabit the Western or Eastern sea routes. The only other clue about locations is the Seaside Hollow, which could be a nod to the Generation 5 mechanic of Hidden Grottos, known as Hidden Hollows in Japan. With several Hisuian forms of Gen 5 Pokémon -- including Braviary and Zoroark -- having been revealed already, this Seaside Hollow could indicate a connection to Legends: Arceus.
Another mystery in the tale is the identity of the Pokémon prince. IGN Africa made a connection to Manaphy, who is available in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl as a mystery gift Pokémon. The mythical water type is known as the "prince of the sea" in the film Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea. Cases could also be made for Prinplup, the second-stage BDSP water starter, or the Gen 5 Pokémon Frillish being the prince; both have regal ties either in their name or design.
Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl developer Game Freak also requested in the games' review embargo that the contents of the Canalave library remain unmentioned, which could be the most telling piece of evidence pointing toward this being a teaser for Legends: Arceus. Regardless, fans won't have to wait too long to find out if there is a Hisuian connection as Pokémon Legends: Arceus releases on Jan. 28, 2022.
