SEGA Announces Range of Video Game Cologne

SEGA has revealed a series of three colognes based off its video game franchises -- and one reveals Sonic the Hedgehog's signature scent.

Listings on the UK's online Sega store reveal colognes based on Shenmue, Yakuza and Sonic the Hedgehog. One of the scents is called the "Official Sonic the Hedgehog ‘Blue Blur’ Unisex Cologne." According to the product's description, "This cologne boasts an aroma of fresh citrus, a zing of grapefruit zest and exotic lemon and lime, topped with the scene of the ocean breeze and chilled melon fade. Take pleasure in the rich base tones of leather, suede, and cedar." The description also notes that the cologne has Sonic's "seal of approval."

As for the other two colognes, the scent based around Yakuza/Ryū ga Gotoku, called the "Official Yakuza/Ryū ga Gotoku ‘Bourbon and Smoke’ Unisex Cologne," smells like "antique oak, cedarwood, beeswax infused with smoky bourbon, leathery rose and scorching pimento." The one drawing from Shenmue, named "Official Shenmue ‘Tobacco and Gold’ Unisex Cologne," smells like "top notes of clashing cardamom and bergamot, smouldering golden tobacco, deep orris and a strong patchouli base."

Debuting in 1991's Sonic the Hedgehog, the titular blue speedster quickly became SEGA's mascot. While the main franchise is primarily platformers, Sonic has appeared in a ton of different titles since his introduction and is one of the most recognizable video game characters in the world. The character made his live-action debut in 2020's Sonic the Hedgehog, which did well enough at the box office to warrant a sequel. That movie is expected to release on April 8, 2022, and feature Ben Schwartz as Sonic the Hedgehog. He'll be joined by Idris Elba as Knuckles the Echidna.

The action-oriented Yakuza franchise began in 2005. The main six titles follow Kazuma Kiryu, a former gangster, as he finds himself embroiled in a variety of different yakuza-based conspiracies. More recently, Yakuza 7/Yakuza: Like a Dragon saw the franchise introduce a new main protagonist, with Kiryu's story having wrapped up. In recent years, the franchise has become significantly more popular outside of Japan than in the past. The most recent release in the franchise is Lost Judgment, a spin-off centered on detective Tayayuki Yagami.

The Shenmue series began in 1999 on SEGA's ill-fated Dreamcast system. Similar to Yakuza in its gameplay style, Shenmue follows martial artist Ryo Hazuki as he hunts his father's killer. A sequel followed in 2001, after which the series laid dormant until 2015, when series director Yu Suzuki launched a successful Kickstarter campaign to get Shenmue III made. That game released in 2019 and received mixed reviews.

All three colognes are available to pre-order now, with an expected release date in December. Currently, they retail for £29.99/$40.47 USD. The colognes were all engineered and designed by Numskull Designs
