Suicide Squad's Jared Leto Says Release the Ayer Cut: 'That's What Streaming's For'

The success of Zack Snyder's Justice League has led to a call for the release of David Ayer's cut of Suicide Squad, another DCEU film that is believed to have been hindered by excessive interference from the studio. Star Jared Leto, who played the Joker in the film, supports the release of an 'Ayer Cut,' saying that that is what streaming services are for.

In an interview with Variety, Leto was asked about the possibility of such a cut. The actor responded, "Absolutely! Why not?" He continued, "Why wouldn't they? Why wouldn’t they? I mean, that's what streaming's for, right?" On social media, Ayer himself added, "Exactly what streaming is for. If you own IP and you have a mandate to monetize it from your shareholders that's exactly what you do."

Suicide Squad was released in 2016, undergoing a number of reshoots and cuts. According to various reports, Warner Bros. demanded that the overall tone and style was changed due to the criticism Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice received, aimed at its dark and gritty tone and atmosphere. In addition, several, more substantial changes were made to the film's storyline. A romantic subplot featuring Deadshot and Harley Quinn was removed, as was the majority of the Joker's role in the film.

Ayer has shared images and even clips showcasing some of the content that was cut from the film's theatrical release. He has previously said of Leto's highly criticized portrayal of Joker, "Jared killed it But no one knows." He has also emphasized repeatedly that the theatrical release does not resemble his vision for Suicide Squad. He previously explained, "I put my life into Suicide Squad. I made something amazing - My cut is [an] intricate and emotional journey with some 'bad people' who are shit on and discarded (a theme that resonates in my soul). The studio cut is not my movie. Read that again. [My] cut is not the 10 week director's cut. It's a fully mature edit by Lee Smith standing on the [incredible] work by John Gilroy. It's all Steven Price's brilliant score, with not a single radio song in the whole thing. It has traditional character arcs, amazing performances, a solid 3rd act resolution. A handful of people have seen it. If someone says they have seen it, they haven't."

A fan campaign, #ReleasetheAyerCut, began shortly after the #ReleasetheSnyderCut campaign for Zack Snyder's Justice League saw success. Ayer has previously explained that his version of Suicide Squad would only require VFX work. Warner Bros. has not announced any plans to release the 'Ayer Cut.'
