Based on the comic book series of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, Amazon Prime Video's The Boys is a gritty superhero TV show following the titular team in its quest to take down Vought International, the company responsible for giving people superpowers. Over the course of its two seasons, The Boys has proven one of Amazon Prime Video's most successful original programs, and so it's no surprise the service greenlit a third season early.
Here's what we know about The Boys Season 3 so far, including the plot, release date and trailer information.
What Is The Boys' Story So Far?
The Boys Season 2 saw Homelander growing increasingly unhinged following the death of Madelyn Stillwell in Season 1 and the discovery of his secret son, Ryan, with Becca Butcher. Homelander spends much of the season trying to get Ryan to tap into his powers, while Becca works to keep the leader of The Seven away from her child. Meanwhile, Billy Butcher works to get his wife back, as she's being held at a secret Vought International compound.
Making matters more complicated is Stormfront. Despite looking like a young hero, Stormfront is revealed as actually being the original supe, having been given the first successful injection of Compound V by Frederick Vought when she was a Nazi in Germany. Stormfront wants to work with Homelander to achieve Vought's dreams of white supremacy.
Opposing Stormfront and Homelander are The Boys, who are able to discover the truth about the former and Vought International's attempts to create a version of Compound V that work in adults. Billy's increasingly cutthroat attitude puts him at odds with his compatriots, who are all wanted in connection with the events of Season 1. However, they find allies in Congresswoman Victoria Neuman and Colonel Grace Mallory, who help them clear their names and expose Stormfront as a Nazi.
In The Boys Season 2's climax, the titular team faces off against Stormfront and Homelander. While they're able to hold them off thanks to some help from Annie January/Starlight and Queen Maeve, Stormfront attacks Becca, Ryan and Billy as they're trying to escape. In the process, Ryan taps into his powers and accidentally kills Becca while badly injuring Stormfront. When Homelander arrives on the scene, Billy works to protect Ryan, though he only survives thanks to Queen Maeve, who promises to release footage from The Boys Season 1 of the supe allowing innocent people to die. Billy then puts Ryan under the protection of Mallory -- who plans to work on a task force headed up by Neuman.
However, Neuman is soon revealed as the head-exploding supe that massacred a number of high-profile characters during a hearing on Vought International's actions and killed the CIA's Susan Raynor. Hughie Campbell, not knowing this, leaves The Boys to go and work for Neuman.
What Is the Story Going into The Boys Season 3?
As The Boys does not follow Ennis and Robertson's original comics series very closely, it's difficult to say for sure just what Season 3 of the Amazon Prime Video series will focus on. However, based on the plot threads left dangling at the end of Season 2, it's very likely The Boys will have to contend in some way with Victoria Neuman while once again taking on Vought International. Homelander is also sure to be a threat, with actor Antony Starr and creator Eric Kripke noting he'll be a "homicidal maniac" in Season 3, further teasing how the leader of The Seven will become more unhinged than ever before. Additionally, Kripke has confirmed Season 3 will feature an superhero orgy called "Herogasm."
In terms of the cast, Supernatural star Jensen Ackles is joining The Boys as Soldier Boy, a Captain America-esque hero from World War II that shares some similarities with Homelander. He'll seemingly be integral to the plot, as Season 3 will explore his old superhero team, Payback, and shed light on Stormfront's history. It seems the show will focus on Soldier Boy and Payback early, as the title of Season 3's premiere is "Payback." In June, Amazon released a look at Ackles in his Soldier Boy costume.
Actor Laz Alonso, who plays Mother's Milk on The Boys, has stated that as every season gets "darker and darker," the addition of Soldier Boy into the main cast "allowed [showrunner Eric Kripke] to not only bring in a character historically who's pretty dark, but it also makes all of the other ensemble Supes darker as well."
Claudia Doumit and Colby Minifie, who play Victoria Neuman and Vought International's Ashley Barret, respectively, have been upgraded to series regulars, while Black Noir has also been teased as having survived his near-death experience in The Boys Season 2. Aya Cash has indicated that Stormfront will not return in Season 3, though her character is said to have survived the end of Season 2.
Newcomers include Katia Winter as Little Nina, Laurie Holden as Crimson Countess, Miles Gaston Villanueva as Supersonic, Sean Patrick Flannery as Gunpowder and Nick Wechsler as Blue Hawk. While those first two characters are based on figures from the comics, the latter three were created for the show. Supersonic, for his part, is rumored to be an ex-boyfriend of Starlight.
So as to bridge the gap between The Boys Seasons 2 and 3, Amazon is releasing a miniseries called "Seven on 7." Airing on the fictional Vought News Network, "Seven on 7" stars Matthew Edison as Cameron Coleman. Segments are generally meant to show the sorts of propaganda that Vought airs to gain support for its superheroes. Early episodes deal with Homelander's status following The Boys Season 2, what happened to Blindspot and more.
